Peralta is a stocky 21-year-old Dominican righty in camp with the Brew Crew after splitting last season between high-A and Double-A ball. He joined the Brew Crew as a 17 year old and will be 22 in May. Peralta hasn't spent a lot of time as a full-time starter, mainly being used swinging from the rotation all the way to the back inning chores probably due to his two-pitch repertoire (fastball-slider, his change-up has gotten decidedly mixed reviews). Some are saying that Peralta is the Brewers top pitching prospect but it's hard to see that. His performance tumbled on promotion to high-A last season and he was simply not good in double-A in just over 40 innings. His walk rates are too high and his K rate crumbled as he advanced and that's a poor signal for major league success at this time. Was he instructed to go with his change-up to learn it in 2010? If that's the case no one is saying it. But it is a long way from a K an inning in the Midwest league to success in Miller Valley, particularly with this bump in the middle. He's obviously well thought of by the organization and he has a live, if not overpowering arm. He'll need to be able to use that change to succeed at all, but it'd be best to stay away from him at this point.

Ryan has some great figures that give us a snapshot of the Fantasy sports industry. There are some quibbles that one could make and Ryan is upfront about the swishiness of the data. You wouldn't want to formally present these specific numbers, but they do show a really interesting health report for the industry, or at least a portion of it.

There's a couple of quick caveats I would make. Some of these numbers, though red, are really tiny downturns given the state of the economy. Secondly although the quality of all of these sites is unquestionable, some of them are fresher than others and some of them have changed in a material way. There's little question that as the big game providers expand their tools and options, it will be very difficult for secondary game providers to stay in business. It isn't necessarily a reflection on the industry as a whole. Finally I would add that some of the losses are counter-balanced by some of the gainers (Ryan provides an abbreviated list) and there are content-based reasons for it. Freshness, different approach, acquisitions and so on. It's fair to say some of them are simply doing a better job.

In light of all the recent closings which you and I are familiar with, the overall portrait is one where the larger problem is how to draw readership and revenue in a fantasy market where the basic commodities, the game software and the numbers, are online and free and in multiple locations.

What do you think are the principle problems and available solutions? Let me throw out a few ideas.

1. The Fantasy audience has aged and evolved and this portion of the industry hasn't changed with it.

When the game first came online, the mere fact that you could get stats on a daily basis, and not wait for the Sunday paper (or The National, or the Baseball Weekly, or the right day's edition of the USA Today or...). The game became accessible to a vast audience who had never really played it before. That audience has now played for 20 years or more but the analysis part of the industry is still producing more or less the same columns - albeit with xFIP instead of BA. A large portion of our subscribing audience can go out and fish themselves, they no longer need the same old fish.

2. The proliferation of unpaid writing brings down the overall quality.

Chicken meet egg. I am not a great writer by any means, but I could certainly do better if I could carve more time out of my busy schedule to do so. The editorial process doesn't generate revenue so it is neglected, or slow. Without funds, it is hard to fill a site with consistently good content. Without consistently good content it is hard to get funds. This is not about bad writing and analysis because throwing money at this will not fix it.

3. We don't embrace the different aspects and levels of the game fully as entertainment.

We all know colleagues whose Fantasy work we despise for being overly simplistic, rudimentary and obvious. But these colleagues appeal to, and have a niche for the younger and/or less experienced audience. There's no shame in providing information to entry-level players and every reason as an industry to do so. Likewise I read brilliant advanced analysis that comes off as a recitation of numbers or a stale five-players-of-the-week list with no hook to bring the experienced player into the content - no practical way to use this for the 6th player.

4. The industry is fragmented, the pieces for a compelling, really compelling Fantasy source are sitting here, but they haven't been put together.

Face it, we all want our brand and while there are exceptions to the rule, most of us haven't found the right way to create synergistic combinations that are mutually beneficial (it is state law to use the term "Synergy" in this type of column). There are exciting combinations of media, original reporting and analysis that are being done right now - by people who are reading this. How do we get them, scratch that, us together?

True life story, I was asked to write for a site and asked what the plan was - nothing detailed, just what might constitute an executive summary of a business plan. It was obvious that the person I was speaking with (a respected industry veteran and one of the best minds I know) wasn't exactly sure what a business plan was and the best he could manage was "put together a really good draft kit and then in a couple of years add a premium side." Well...OK. I asked another well known person what it was he thought the good player would like to see and the best he could come up with seemed to be "whatever seems relevant." That may have been the product of our interaction, but the point remains the same - many people in this industry just want to re-package what is being done, do it "better," and sell it. That's not a business model.

5. We need to bring creative solutions to the problems of revenue.

This means figuring out how to drive traffic, enhance stickiness. Unique approaches to advertising. "micro-subscriptions." Multi-site subscriptions, cross licensing, something.

The problem is not that the industry is shrinking. Despite yearly ups and downs, millions of people play fantasy sports religiously...actually more often than they practice religion. And the problem is not content because as you all know there are fine writers out there producing excellent work. The problem is how do we put them together? How do we provide enough value-added to get our readers to generate enough income so that we can generate content for them to enjoy this game we all love?

Glad you asked, the Rays just grabbed Delaney who is a 26-year-old sometime closer from the Twins organization. He's been pitching professionally since 2006 with his first major league cuppa this past season (one appearance). He was moved off of the Twins 40-man roster to make room for left-handed specialist Dusty Hughes. Delaney is a better pitcher than Hughes almost certainly but pitches with the wrong hand as Hughes is slated to be a lefty guy in the crowded Minnesota pen.

The shine came off his resume when he hit triple-A where in his 97 appearances over a season and a half, he posted a 4.65/1.28, having previously had a career ERA under 2.00. He's not overpowering, with a low 90's fastball but has excellent command, posting just under two walks a game. He was used regularly as a closer in 2007 between two single-A levels and was dominant, posting 35 saves and a 1.03/0.86 line and was equally good in 2008 sharing closer duties between high-A and double-A (1.23/0.83). The following season he was, for organizational reasons removed from the closing rotation, and eventually was called up to triple-A where he was less effective, mainly due to a bout of long balls.

The Rays bullpen obviously has some possibilities, and Delaney throws strikes. Managers like that in their set-up guys. It's not impossible that at some point Delaney could be give a closing shot given how good he was in the role over a couple of seasons.

He's not actually fantasy relevant at this point, but not a bad idea, should he make the major league roster, to keep an eye on his performance because if he is solid, the Rays bullpen is a good candidate to change closers at some point.

Martin Perez TEX

Perez was listed as the #23 MLB prospect. He's a smallish lefty who reached double-A Frisco at age 18, repeating that level in 2010 with decidedly mixed results. Perez was reportedly adding a pitch and as a result his control numbers, home runs, basically everything went south leading to a disastrous 5.96/1.68 line. He was named their minor league pitcher of the year the previous season and has drawn comparisons to Johan Santana. Not yet. He managed just over four innings per start in his 23 attempts in 2010. It's a healthy arm but he'll have to put the wheels back on.

Wil Myers KC

Myers is a 20-year-old catcher in the Royals stacked minor league system. He's a bit tall and there's some question as to whether he'll stay behind the plate. He's reached as far as high-A Wilmington where he put up 14 home runs and an eye-catching .346 albeit in 46 games. He's an on-base machine, drawing 85 walks over 126 games last season en route to a .429 OBP. He looks a bit too much like Daric Barton at that age (Barton hit .317 with a .426 OBP and 13 home runs). Barton got injured of course and moved off the plate. You'll want to see ho his power develops and whether he stays at catch, but obviously he's of interest in formats with minor league slots.

**UPDATE** Kansas City has announced they are moving Myers to OF...the day after I post this. Let's see, pretend omniscience, or admit lucky timing? I knew this was going to happen!!!!

St. Louis reporter Matthew Leach said watching Iglesias was like "baseball crack" which he didn't exactly mean as a compliment, instead questioning his showboating of his obvious skills. Iglesias will obviously get a shot at some time, but he hasn't hitherto shown sufficient power or speed to be a fantasy factor. Dee Gordon is the smurfy, Punch-and-Judy hitter who stole 73 in 2009 and followed that up with 53 in 2010. This will be his age 23 seasons and the speed is real but.it.is.just.about.all.he.does. And he gets caught a lot. You'll have to explain to me why he is not Everth Cabrera. Arenciba lost his lock....regained his lock on the catching job for the Jays. Mammoth power, questionable contact. Yonder Alonso has no obvious place to play on the Reds since they have a first baseman and his outfield credential are hardly those to push anyone off the line-up. Alonso was the seventh overall pick in 2008, but he really doesn't do enough of anything as yet to excite fantasy owners with 24 home runs and 14 steals in 821 minor league at-bats while posting a .291 batting average and he'll be 24 in April. We'd pass.

Rosario hit 19 home runs in 73 games in Tulsa, which is not a home run paradise. He could be the rockies starting catcher by the end of the season. He doesn't walk much, but neither does he strikeout much. Scheppers turned 24 last week and the big righty progressed as far as triple-A in his limited professional career after being selected as a sandwich pick in 2009. Good stuff, very iffy control and has so far given up way too many hits working as a swingman and sometimes closers. He's one of the candidates to be groomed as a closer should Neftali Feliz be moved back to the rotation, now that Frank Francisco has been traded. His current skill set would be better in that role than in the rotation. Chris Archer was a part of the Garza deal, Archer has been pitching professionally since 2006, just now rising to double-A but he's not old, turning 23 at the end of the coming season. His control has improved the past couple of stops, but is still well north of four. He succeeds by not giving up hits, just 272 over his last three minor league seasons comprising 366.2 innings. Since the vast majority of that has been against A ball hitters, you'll want to see a full season of double-A before investing.

Chisenhall is a left-handed hitting third-base prospect for the Indians. Hit hit 17 long balls in his second time through double-A Akron. He doesn't strikeout too much and he takes a walk. But his minor league SLG is .456, only .439 on the double-A level and he doesn't hit doubles and isn;t a big guy so it is really hard to see much power developing here. He was drafted as a shortstop but has played third since low-A so maybe Casey Blake is his upside? Kyle Gibson is a 23-year-old, 6'6 right handed pitcher who was talked about, before the Carl Pavano signing, as being a possible part of the 2011 rotation. He's going to be a control-type seven K/9 guy on the major league level unless something changes. Pitchers like this get followings before they arrive and then produce more or less what they did, which is mediocrity.

Lyles has posted a pretty uninspiring 17-26 record in the Astro's system but that shouldn't deter you from looking at him as he has an opportunity to make the Astros rotation this season. He's a strikeout an inning guy with a walk rate of about three (as are most of the guys on this list) but who has improved as he has risen through the system, including a tough transition to double-A Corpus Christi as a 19-year-old. He should be on your prospect list. Jake Odorizzi, although the major league ready guys were the most lauded in the Greinke trade, was the keystone. He is seriously good, surrendering just 99 hits in 120.2 2010 innings while striking out 135. Granted as a 20-year-old in the Midwest league, but he could be a front of the rotation start and serious fantasy pitcher.

Gary Sanchez is an 18-year-old back stop who batted .329 in rookie and low-A ball as a 17 year old. Banuelos will turn 20 in March and has made it as far as the double-A Eastern league. Sanchez is currently projected by some to stay behind the plate and despite his age, seems primed to rise through the Yankees organization. (thus the willingness of the Yankees to offer Jesus Montero?) . Banuelos hasn't missed a beat on any level also starting as a 17-year-old in the rookie Gulf Coast League. Yankees prospects are routinely dismissed as being oversold. But these guys appear to be the goods. Banuelos struck-out 62 on 44.1 innings over 10 starts in Tampa, earning a brief look in Trenton. He'll obviously have to be stretched out after missing time due to injury, but all the parts are there.

Tyler Matzek was the 11th overall pick in 2009 and walked 62 in 89.1ip in sallie league ball at age 19. That will have to change. We like Lamb better, reaching double-A ball as a 19-year-old lefty and posting a 10-7 with a 2.38/1.13 over three levels in 2010. He's only pitched 33 innings in double-A (and not well) so he's at least a year away, probably a year and a half. Nick Franklin turns 20 in March and is a switch-hitting middle infielder having played second and short. What puts him on this list is that he hit 23 home runs and nabbed 25 bases in 516 at-bats, all but three at single-A. He's a terrible fielder, but with those numbers as long as he finds a spot on the line-up card he'll be a fantasy prospect. He's been striking out once every four at-bats which is also a concern. Aaron Hicks is mainly a center-fielder but can play right as well (and presumably left). He doesn't have much power but has 20 steal speed. He gets on base, but doesn't hit for much average. His main asset is his ability to get on base, which he did at a .401 clip in his second time through single-A Beloit as a 20-year-old. He switch hits so he'll be moved up until he has no excuse to do so. This doesn't make him an ideal fantasy source for anything except a potentially good amount of runs if he found his way to the top of an order. He's a tall kid, and slender, so perhaps more power could develop, but at the expense of speed? If he falters, and most players do, he's looking at fourth outfielder heaven.

Minor wasn't very consistent on the Major League level, but he wasn't over-matched, even into September when he was wearing down. He managed 43 strikeouts in just over 40 innings including the big 12 strikeout game in Wrigley Field. Sale was the 13th pick of the 2010 draft, yet was dominant in his 21 major league appearances in the same season. Sale might be the White Sox closer despite the usual prejudice against lefties in that role. And if not he ought to work his way into the rotation, where he should also be successful.

Casey Kelly was a first round draft choice of the Red Sox as a shortstop where he had no success to speak of and was converted to pitching where he has enjoyed some success in A ball. The arm is unquestionably there, but he's not ready for 2011 as his 5.31 ERA at double-A last season suggests. Brandon Belt on the other hand batted .352 on three levels in 2010 and even his .229 in 61 triple-A at-bats masks a .383 OBP and four home runs. He's pretty clearly ready, but the Giants have a warehouse of committed veterans who are either first basemen or ought to be, so Giants fans may have to wait for Belt to lose a year of arbitration before he is called up. You definitely want him, probably also in redraft leagues if you can stash. Brett Lawrie has no immediate path to play in 2011 after coming over in the Shawn Marcum deal, and good numbers in double-A Huntsville have failed in the past (see Escobar, Alcides) but he hit 60 extra base hits in 135 games to go along with 30 steals. Some of that is speed, but for a middle-infielder that looks like future fantasy gold. Lawrie just truned 21 last week. Jarrod Parker has now missed a full season and enters 2011 with all the questions marks one would assume. His minor league numbers have been good but not spectacular, giving up nearly a hit an inning while walking three. You shouldn't count on him this season.

We discussed Moore in our first of this series (link coming). His spectacular strike-out numbers have grabbed everyone's attention in the Rays system although he is probably at least a year away. Machado was the third overall pick of the 2010 draft and played a little in rookie leagues and in the low-A New York Penn League. He's a big kid but may be able to stay at Shortstop. He's a ways away, won't turn 19 until July. Jonathan Singleton is a 19 year old left-handed first baseman in the Phillies organization. The 8th rounder for 2009 hasn't made it past Sallie ball as yet but shows good contact (74 strikeouts in 376 at-bats) to go along with 62 walks. He's likely to start 2011 in high-A or double-A and is a ways away from having fantasy impact.

Jennings may still have a shot at starting in Tampa even after the signings of Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez, but his leash will be that much shorter. Jennings is unlikely to provide much more than stolen bases although the Rays obviously hope he develops some power. Drabek will likely be over-priced. It's sensible for the Jays to have kept him at double-A New Hampshire rather than the pitcher-killing Las Vegas for the season even though he was clearly ready for triple-A. The Jays have some extra pitching and in any case Neither Drabek's K rate ( seven-ish) nor walk rate (around three) bode well for fantasy owners in 2010 for countables nor rates. People are going to bid him up and he's likely to be a good pitcher at some point but this is not the most likely. Freeman will likely start for the Braves and is likely, also to be of limited use. The power isn't there yet, so you'll have to hope for batting average. Shelby Miller was the Cards #1 pick (19 over all) in the 2009 draft and obviously has a short resume. As a 20-year-old in the Midwest league he struck out 140 in 104.1 innings without any serious control problems along the way. Big right-hander in the archetypal form of a staff horse, but most observers think he's a couple years from contributing to a major league rotation.

Montgomery is a lefty who will be 22 in July, His numbers, while still good, have deteriorated as he has moved up the chain. Lefties like this get chances and although his numbers aren't as flashy as guys like Matt Moore or Jeremy Hellickson, they're perfectly solid with strikeout rates just below nine and an eye-popping seven long balls in 245.2 innings. Britton is another left-handed prospect for the Orioles. He's 23 and reached triple-A Norfolk last season, making 12 reasonable starts. Because the Orioles have so many young guys who are going to be counted on to make their rotation, Britton is unlikely, in this writer's opinion, to get much play in Baltimore (even if a Chris Tillman or Jake Arrieta fails), nor would he be likely to succeed right out of the box.

Pineda turned 22 in January of this season and split 2010 between double- and triple-A ball, his first time at either level. This blog hates K:BB ratios, but 154:34 will get your attention. His 4.76 ERA at Tacoma doesn't bode well, but that was entirely due to nine home runs in 62.1 innings and home runs had not previously been an issue (even in High Desert the previous season which is an even worse environment than many of the PCL venues he served in 2010). He's not really ready, but the combination of his low walk-rate and the friendly environment in SafeCo would make him usable right out of the box. His strikeout rate has improved (slightly) as he has risen. Jacob Turner will be 20 in May and the highest he has reached is high-A ball. He was the 9th overall pick in 2009 and is already being talked about as being given a legitimate shot at the 2011 rotation. Colour us skeptical. Good player, but not yet. Jameson Taillon was the second overall pick last season. An immense right-hander he has topped out at or near triple-digits and won;t turn 20 until after this season. He throws a slider, curve and change-up and is dizzying to watch on the mound with an inconsistent delivery, landing spot and so on. The arm is unquestionable and it's fun to see him break off curves and a quick-breaking two seamer. But he is a total mess and many observers feel he needs to lay off some of the pitches until his mechanics are sorted out to avoid injury.

Hellickson was Tampa's minor league pitcher of the year. Hellickson was conditioned for the bullpen at times last season raising speculation that he may be headed there. He, Matt Moore and Jake McGee are the Reason Matt Garza is calling the Friendly confines home. Moore just reached high-A in 2010 posting 208 K's in 144.2 innings and will be 22 in June. McGee is 24 and was shifted to the bullpen when reaching triple-A Durham last season. Moore struck-out 145 in 116.2 innings in high-A at the same age as Moore (Moore reads a year younger because he was born just before the cut-off, McGee just after). McGee was lights-out in the brief bullpen look, and Hellickson is the over-ready crown-jewel so you would think the Rays would want Hellickson to be able to take the rotation slot if he is able.

Ackley is almost certainly slotted to start the season in triple-A. He's good, he has power but observers think it would be a very good idea if he started in triple-A. The Mariners signed Adam Kennedy (just arrested on suspicion of drunk driving), because you can never have too many zero upside Josh Wilson types around. When he arrives and when the kinks are worked out he'll be a middle-infield power source by which we mean you want him.

Moustakas and Hosmer are the two prime reasons that the Royals were named the top farm system by Baseball America. Moustakas dropped a cool 36 on the long ball count in 2010 and plays the hot corner, while Hosmer, a year younger at age 21, handled first to the tune of 20 homes runs and a .338 batting average between high-A and double-A in 2010. Hosmer gets on base better than Moustakas at this point and neither strikesout at all for such good power hitters - 66 in 586 at-bats for Hosmer, 67 in 534 for the Moose. For Fantasy owners Moustakas is more valuable simply because he plays the right position.

Julio Teheran ATL

Happy Birthday Julio!, just turned 20 as of this writing. Teheran advanced to double-A as a 19-year-old, and struck out 38 in 40.0 innings (159 in 142.2 innings for the season). His control took a dive at double-A where he walked 17 in those 40 innings, but had only walked 23 in his other 102.2 innings. I am told this was about a new pitch and not any particular wildness. Teheran doesn't walk people, strikes out one an inning and doesn;t surrender the long ball (only 15 in 239 minor league innings). Because no one has the kind of strikeout numbers that Matt Moore has this side of Brendan Morrow and Carlos Marmol on the major league level, I'd probably place Teheran ahead of Moore as this list does even though I think Moore could be effective on the major league level almost as soon as Teheran.

Lindstrom goes to Rockies for Musick, Arisitil

Although Aristil has a nice strikeout rate and got an appearance in at triple-A, the string bean righty reliever with the godawful walks and runs allowed is probably less interesting than Wes Musick, who posted 109 K's and just 26 walks in 122.1 Sallie league innings for Asheville. He's 24 next week, so definitely a bit old for the circuit and obviously we don't know whether he'll stay as a starter. But lefties who strike out some, don't walk too many and don't give up too many HRs get chances. Musick was orgiinally an amateur draft pick of the Astros and so seems to have been on their radar.

Not much to give for Lindstrom, who entered 2010 as the Astros closer. The main thing to remember about Lindstrom is that despite the shortness of his major league resume, he's not a "prospect" for anything. He'll be 31 in February, has a history of health issues and has only one really competent year under hs belt, 2009 as a set-up guy for the Marlins.

He doesn't dominate people enough to be a serious late inning guy with 187 K's in 225 career innings, and the Rockies have a competent, if health-challenged closer in Huston Street. Wherein lies the possible fantasy potential as a fill-in in what seems to be the inevitable Street absence and/or possible interim duty if Street got shopped (as has been talked about except the Rockies stayed in contention longer than perhaps expected).

Lindstrom will likely have value in holds leagues and if you already have him on a keeper roster, you might hold on (obviously unless another useful piece comes around), but otherwise you can just wait for waiver wire madness. The other guys you can probably forget.

I think not.

The Royals have reportedly received three named players (Shortstop Alcides Escobar, Outfielder Lorenzo Cain and #1 Pitching prospect as listed by Baseball America, Jake Odorizzi) and a Player to Be Named later who is reported to be Jeremy Jeffress.

Escobar had a little of his shiny prospect sheen worn off by a difficult 2010, but let's be fair, he was a 23-year old starting shortstop, he'll be fine. Cain got his cuppa this season and probably would NOT have been given a chance to start despite Doug Melvin's earnest pitching of the 25-year-old. Cain has speed and had a fine year between double- and triple-A after nearly playing himself out of a job in a dreadful 2009 where everything that could go wrong did. Most of you are familiar with the story of Jeffress and his substance issues that come along with his triple digits stuff. Raw doesn't begin to describe it, but he duly impressed observers both for the liveliness of his arm and his ability to stay on script as regards his travails. It's true that he was "handled" throughout the experience, but it is not nothing that he recognizes that part of earning trust is saying the right things and allowing people to take care of him. He's a major, major arm.

Less well known until today was the 20-year-old Odorizzi who was annointed in the forthcoming Baseball America report as the Brewer's top prospect. Odorizzi was a sandwich pick in 2008 who just reached A ball in 2010. His misses bats, suppresses hits and has maintained control despite having pitches force -fed to him. He was clearly better than the Midwest league despite the 3.43 ERA, striking out 135 in 120.2 innings, yielding only 99 hits and a slim seven long balls. All this while putting in nearly six innings per start in his first long professional season.

Further Odorizzi is just a string bean, there's every thought that he'll put on weight and gain at least a few inches on some already imposing stuff.

So for Greinke, whose situation was not handled well at all by the Royals, they got back two potential front end starting pitchers and two valuable, if not star, players who can play on the major league level right now. All under control and cheap.

That's a pretty darn good deal for Kansas City.

It must seem a little odd that the Rangers, who came into 2010 with supposed glut of catching (where would they play Max Ramirez? Taylor Teagarden had been so unexpectedly good, he had to play. Saltalamacchia was rumoured to be halfway to Boston for Clay Buchholz) have been trying to buy catchers ever since.

Torrealba is a 31-year-old cacth and throw type who has shown some offensive resiliency in recent years, including a kind of funky reverse split this season hitting right-handers better than lefties (he's a right-handed hitter) and feasting on pitching in PetCo of all places. He's useful piece, but would be a stretch as a full time option. According to baseball-reference. He's not had any at-bats in The Ballpark. Torrealba has spent most of his career in the National League.

He has very little fantasy value outside of perhaps AL only leagues. The top end of catching will not be as thin as in recent seasons, and players like Torrealba will have correspondingly little relevance.

Uribe looks fairly nice on the Dodgers, and his versatility is certainly a plus, particularly given Rafael Furcal's continued fragility. In some ways it is an odd signing because the Dodgers don't have an obvious need for him as it is an incremental improvement over what they had been using at second base or third base.

Nonetheless, the Dodgers appear to be serious about putting together a championship team. The same pundit crowd is making the same silly arguments that they made about the Rangers vis-a-vis the Dodgers ability to pay players given the McCourt divorce case. As with the Rangers situation (The Rangers were relatively cash-rich but caught up in the broader implication of Tom Hicks' finances - they always had the cash, the question was whether the courts would allow them to spend it). Likewise, despite the fact that Frank McCourt hadn't lowered the amount of debt he incurred when buying the Dodgers (almost entirely on credit. Dear fan, it is almost true that if you walk through the turnstile in Chavez Ravine once, you put more cash into the Dodgers than have the McCourts), the Dodgers are a profitable franchise, even after the debt service. They have the money to spend.

If you are a Dodgers fan, you have to like the team that is being constructed for you. If Don Mattingly can bring the pieces together, they will be bleeding blue well into October.

Same Vazquez, Same Results?

Javier Vazquez just signed a one-year deal with the Florida Marlins after a brief and torrid courtship. Vazquez wanted to go, they wanted him to come - done deal. Obviously the Marlins would like the 2009 Cy Young contending version when he was in the senior circuit, rather than last season's disastrous Yankees version.

Which is more likely?

Fangraphs has Bill James' projections for 2011 in their database and James has Vazquez at 198ip, 3.73/1.23 with his strikeout rate returning to a robust 8.32/9ip. James' projections tend to be fairly standard, ending up at something above or below the three year average depending on the players age (Vazquez will be 35 in June). On the face of it, those numbers look a little optimistic. Vazquez' strikeout rate tumbled to 6.92 last season, and faded quite a lot as he eventually pitched himself out of the rotation. Adding to the worry is that after pitching more innings in 2009 than he had since 2003 with the Expos, Vazquez' velocity was seriously down, indicating all those innings may be taking their toll. Therein lies the big question. Is he healthy or not?

Oddly, the 2010 provides some comfort, because it parallels what happened to Vazquez during the last time Bobby Bonilla took him on a trip (obscure Mets reference). His 2010 strikeout rate was the lowest since 2004, the last time he was a Yankee, his 2010 walk rate, beat out that Yankee's season (and his sophomore campaign with the Expos) for the worst in his career. Home run rate? Ditto. in 2004, Vazquez had come off four straight 200+ IP seasons and two 230+ IP seasons. He was not terribly good in 2005, but all those numbers bounced back, despite playing in a hitters park. Now he moves back to the NL and a pitcher's park.

Vazquez has been extremely durable managing at least 32 starts every single season since 1999 until pitching himself out of the rotation last year. By now, if there was something he was doing to cause problems, it would have shown up. Clearly there is no chronic issue here. His strikeout rate dipped to just south of seven and that facing the DH instead of the pitcher. It's reasonable to say that Vazquez is no more likely than any 34- or 35-year-old in terms of injury risk. I like James projections here, but with the Marlins beefing up their bullpen and Vazquez' 2010 fade, I might put the total numbers a bit lower. Note James' numbers are a projection - mathematically derived from perforance, whereas what I am saying is a prediction. With my prediction and $4.50 you can get a latte at your local McCoffee boutique. I'd look for 180IP, and 165K's here, with a mid-3's ERA and a sub 1.20 WHIP. (His walk rate should go down one or one and a half per nine). Note that this strikeout prediction is based on adding the NL bump (facing the pitcher) to his 6.92 and a small improvement, not some huge leap.

Quick note for the BABIP fans amongst us. See his "low" BABIP? In 2009 when his BABIP was an "average" .297 he gave up 6.61 in-play hits per nine innings. In 2010 with the "good" .276 BABIP he gave up 7.05. This happens all the time - pitchers give up hits, the denominator in the BABIP changes, ergo we have the illusion of variability and "luck." Vazquez was worse in 2010 smply because he gave up 32 home runs in 157.1 ip, instead of 20 in 219.1 and walked 3.72 instead of 1.81. BABIP, and the related FIP are nearly useless for determining pitcher skill or predicting future results.

The Marlins signed Vazquez for $7 million dollars. It's a great deal for them. Even if he is the Vazquez of 2010, it's a one-year deal and it's not going to break their bank. If he is the 2009 version (or close to it), it'll be a tremendous bargain. For Vazquez, it means he gets to move to an ideal situation to put the shine back on his resume and if so he'll draw a big payday in 2012, albeit probably only for a National League team this time around.

Garland will see them in McCourt

Jon Garland is the kind of pitcher who hovers on the brink of fantasy relevance. Moving to Petco, where he struck out nearly 7 per 9, helped his value a lot. He is an innings eater, and innings eaters get more decisions, thus his 26 decisions in 33 starts. Those fantasy players who want a bit more control over their wins can start looking at decision rates and ip/w to get a handle - I'll have a detailed look at this in Optimal Baseball in January. Moving to Chavez Ravine, Garland may actually be improving as his career numbers in Los Angeles are significantly better than in San Diego (2.53/1.25 in Dodger Stadium, 3.20/1.34 in PetCo Park).

Garland's bugaboo in 2010 was his 1.31 WHIP, which was not a result of hits, but instead an alarming rise in his walks. Perhaps Garland felt better able to go deep in counts, relying on the distant outfield fences and heavy air at sea-level to keep any mistakes from hurting too much.

BABIPers and FIPers will point out Garland's .267 BABIP for 2010, which is significantly lower than his .302 and .315 of the previous two campaigns. The line of reasoning will be that this is luck, it will regress and his ERA and WHIP will go up. In fact his BABIP could at least stay stable since his strikeout rate is bound to regress, offsetting a few more hits (as far as BABIP goes). His ERA is likely to go up a bit, but mainly because it was a little low compared to his base-runner and home run rates - not because of "luck" on balls in play.

It's a great signing for the Dodgers (for whom he was so good in 2009), reportedly for one year with a team option.

Zach, Duke of the Desert?

Probably not.

Duke goes from the Pirates where he had a terrible season to the Diamondbacks for the ubiquitous PTBNL. Duke was, frankly, terrible last season, posting a 5.72/1.65 line to go with his 8-15 record. But to be fair this was, by far, the left-hander's worst season, and despite all the bad numbers He increased his strikeout rate to 5.43/9ip over the 4.23 and 4.48 of 2008 and 2009 respectively. Good thing too, the old rule of thumb about pitcher's success with more than a year of 4.5 or less holds true pretty often (see 5.72/1.65 as example A).

Duke obviously isn't a fantasy pitcher. He's moving from a reasonably neutral park (PNC has a Pitcher Park Factor of 101) to a hitter's park (Arizona's is 105) and if any team has a worse bullpen than the Pirates, it would be the hapless bunch in Phoenix. But his body of work as a pitcher in the real game has not been terrible. Just a notch worse than the league averages prior to the 2010 season. Duke turns 28 in April and if he makes the Diamondbacks rotation one wouldn't be surprised if he turned in double digits wins with an ERA at 4.00. If he doesn't he could still have a long career as a lefty reliever.

Would Rod Be a Good Catch?

Rod Barajas - Los Angeles Dodgers - Split Statistics - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly looking at free agent Rod Barajas, late of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Barajas put together a season of Barajassian proportions - that is, plenty of power (17 Home Runs) and not much else. Barajas had predictable results for the Mets. .225/.263/.414 of 74 games, and a bit worse in Citifield than on the road. He managed 5 home runs over 36 games there, which is actually a pretty good result. The best news on Barajas was the 11 home runs he smashed in April and May - less good were the six he managed over the remainder of the season (albeit after playing himself out of regular work with a disastrous .183/.258/.217 June, followed by an equally bad .146/.186/.244 July).

How does Barajas project in Boston? Better, but with the usual caveats. Catchers usually decline and often rapidly at age 32, and Barajas turned 35 in September. He makes contact, only 54 strikeouts in 313Abs, but is walk-averse, 13 walks in the same period. That's particularly egregious because as a National League back-stop he was batting in front of the pitcher much of the time (and batting well in that 8 slot by the way).

The Red Sox have a distinct problem. They made the decision in 2010 to play some defense, at the cost of quite a few outs on the offensive side. It is true that they suffered a lot of injuries, and key injuries at that, but if they had gotten more out of Mike Cameron would they have, you know, gotten more out of Mike Cameron? If they want their offense to click, can they spend as many outs as Barajas would cost if he were to play regularly? He enjoyed some success as a part timer for the Dodgers, but the Red Sox back-up is likely to get significant time unless Jarrod Saltalamacchia (the current presumptive starter) suddenly finds a health plan that provides preventative care. The danger here is that the Sox may be over-reacting to their poor throwing game (Victor Martinez was simply unacceptable the first part of the season although he improved) to get the strong-armed Barajas who had an uncharacteristically poor throwing year himself.

As much as this blogger dislikes catch-and-throw types, the Sox would be better served with a reliable defensive catcher at league minimum and some bullpen help than spending to bring in the 35-year-old Barajas. Better yet, use that money to bring back Adrian Beltre, whose game is built for Fenway and the Sox.

Mets' director of amateur scouting loses job | MLB.com: News

One of the things we tend to overlook in the business of baseball is the temporary nature of things. This extends out of the clubhouse, past the executive suite and on the road to all the far-flung people that make a baseball organization run. Rudy Tarrasas has been in charge of the Mets amateur scouting and drafts for several years now and has done a pretty darn good job. My colleague Brian Joura talks in detail about the results here at his 360Mets blog in the context of Omar Minaya's tenure.

That the Mets are a bit old and saddled with some immovable contracts has little to do with what Terrasas has done. While it will be written that Terrasas is a scapegoat or is taking the blame for organizational decisions gone bad, the actual truth is both kinder yet more harsh. Terrasas brought in his lunch pail every day and did a fine job but has still been relieved of his duties for one reason and one reason only: to make room for new GM Sandy Alderson to put his own man into the job.

And this isn't to blame Alderson either. His own neck is on the line not for the Carlos Beltran contract (directly) or the Johan Santana contract (directly) or even the Jason Bay contract (directly). But for what comes next and how quickly it arrives. Alderson was a smart hire and presumably demanded (and got) the right to set up his own shop. That's good for the Mets, whose recent history has been plagued with what can only be described as questions about the amount of authority that Omar Minaya actually wielded.

Terrasas did a fine job for the Mets and it is harsh that the business of baseball requires that such men move their shingle when a new nameplate is put on their boss's door. Although it has been reported in some outlets that he has been fired, he remains under contract to the Mets and reportedly will be offered another position within the organization.

Whoever ends up employing Terrasas next season will be lucky to have his services.

Paulino is the New De La Rosa?

Jorge De La Rosa, the free agent hurler from the Colorado Rockies, is rumoured to be in line for a four-year deal in the eight digit range. Not a bad payday for a guy who came to the Rockies just a few years ago at age 27 sporting an oh-so-fashionable 15-23 record with 5.85 ERA. Now the Rockies have acquired another 27-year-old hurler. Felipe Paulino brings to them a 6-21 record with a 5.83 mark.

But the similarities go more deeply. Despite a terrible 20 home runs in limited work last season, Paulino has a record of suppressing home runs, giving only .6/9ip as a minor leaguer and a very stingy total of four in 91.2ip for the 2010 campaign. Likewise DLR has given .6 as a minor leaguer. DLR's minor league strikeout rate was 8.4, Paulino's 8.3.

Obviously it is an imperfect science bringing along a fireballing walk machine, but Paulino's main bugaboo, despite 2009's long ball problem, has been walks. And walks don't travel more than 90 feet regardless of the park.

Cody Johnson is a immense left-handed slugger who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves organization in 2006 as a 17-year-old. Johnson had a inauspicious debut in his professional debut of 32 games that season which is frankly not that unusual for a kid with money in his pocket and nothing really on the line. That debut didn't earn him a trip out of rookie ball the following season, but a more motivated Johnson ripped up Danville to the tune of a 1.004 OPS and 17 home runs in 63 games. Wherein the long ball took over his life.

In 2008 and 2009 the prodigious power continued with Johnson slugging 58 homes runs over 912 ABs, and actually walking a reasonable amount of times, 40 times in 2008 and a more-than-respectable 67 times in 2009. But.....and there's always a but in these stories,The strikeout per 4 at-bats of Danville became the 1K in every 2.55 at-bats in Rome, Mrytle Beach and (briefly) Mississippi.

Wheels flying off in all directions, the bonus baby struck out 114 times last season in 233 double-A at-bats (earning some remedial trips to the Gulf Coast league and Myrtle Beach). And on top of the the Home runs started to diminish (18 in 106 games) and his walk rate dropped nearly in half.

Johnson is still big, he is still left handed and he is still only 22. And now, he is a Yankee, traded today for cash. The kind of batter who seldom succeeds I am afraid. Ultimately Johnson will probably have to change his game, and ask Jeff Francoeur how easy that is.

It's 40-man Madness!

The Diamondbacks claimed Juan Jaime, a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher from the Washington Nationals. That's right, the deadline for setting the 40-man roster prior to the rule 5 draft is upon us. And lots of obscure players are being waived and outrighted and claimed and.... We won't run down the rules in detail here. Suffice it to say teams are choosing which players to "protect" and moving them to the 40-man major league roster. Other players are being out-righted or otherwise removed and thus exposed to other teams.

One such player is Juan Jaime, who missed the 2010 season following Tommy John Surgery. Jaime's numbers pop out at you. 146 K's in 111.2 ip and only 69 hits in the same period (he reached as high as Sallie league A-ball). his three home runs allowed will also get your attention almost far enough for you to miss the 71 walks. Otherwise, dear reader Juan Jaime would not have switched teams and been in the news today. It's not particularly a good sign when his 31 walks in 55.2 innings as a starter in A-ball is an improvement, but at least that is (small sample of course) where one can at least see the shore from the deck of a ship sinking under the weight of the free base-runners.

The days where Tommy John surgery meant a huge question mark are gone, particularly for someone so young (notice I am not making a joke about the Washington Nationals medical staff being so experienced with the procedure). 10-3 2.42/1.25 is worth keeping track of, although he is obviously a couple of years off. And note the pick-ups today are not rule 5 picks, even thought the moves were made to accommodate the coming rule 5 draft..

My takeaway from this - along with all the fascinating minutiae of the Cy, was the very excellent observation that Felix' win was not a "victory" for advanced metrics and Sabremetrics generally (as posited humorously by the inimitable Tom Tango) but instead a fairly sensible decision made on the basis of traditional stats. His strikeout totals and ERA. (some neat little bits in there that in fact the "advanced" stats might argue against Felix although Felix certainly is in all conversations).

I'd just add one thing. Although win totals vary from season-to-season, in the long run pitchers who pitch well (by what the advanced metrics measure) win more games than pitchers who do not. As a group pitchers who pitch well, win more, even on bad teams and with bad defenses. And the converse is equally true - those pitchers that win consistently, as a group pitch better.

We in the Sabremetric community need to make sure that in correctly saying that Wins are merely a branch of the tree, that we don't make the similar mistake of saying that WAR or FIP is the actual trunk, no matter how closely it may correlate with the roots or bark.

Marlin's Madness?

Two of the more talked about moves of this hot stove season have been widely-criticized trades by the Florida Marlins. The first sent 23-year-old first round pick Cameron Maybin to the Padres for bullpen parts Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica. The second of these, roundly denounced, shipped power-hitting pivot Dan Uggla to the Braves in return for Omar Infante and lefty reliever Mike Dunn.

Without question the Marlins gave up the best player in these deals. Uggla is a sturdy defensive second baseman with the obvious superlative power. Maybin has the most tools of anyone in the deal and fantasy owners drool over the potential speed/power combination he offers. Neither player is without a problem.

Uggla, for all his skills is entering his last arbitration season and will certainly get a raise over his current $7.8 million salary if an extension cannot be agreed. Uggla is said to have turned down a four-year deal worth twelve million per season. Maybin continues to be unable to control the strike zone, striking out 92 times in 296 at-bats in the most recent campaign. He may never be able to successfully hit major league pitching.

In return, the Marlins get a glovesy 29 year old slap hitter in Infante who performed better than his skill set suggested last season and three quality, if unknown, relievers. Anyone who has followed the Marlins understand that they struggled with their bullpen last season. But what does a better bullpen mean after all? They didn't get a closer.

Well, take a look at the team stats linked above. The San Diego Padres were amongst the worst run-producing teams in all of baseball, so were the San Francisco Giants. Both finished with over 90 wins and the Padres just missed out on a playoff spot. But unlike the Giants whose reason for success was obvious (Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Bumgarner), the Padres starting staff featuring a fading Mat Latos and the immortal thunderbolts emanating from Jon Garland and Clayton Richard.

What worked for the Padres was that of the 1460 or so innings each major league pitching staff must complete, the Padres got well over 400 from seven relievers who cost them a grand totals of about $7 million dollars. About the amount of money that was owed Lance Berkman when he went to the Yankees (who despite their $200 million payroll were forced to use Sergio Mitre in a second-round playoff game).

Heath Bell, Mike Adams, Luke Gregerson, Joe Thatcher, Ernesto Frieri, Webb and Mujica combined for a 2.46/1.04 line with 450 strikeouts in 417.1 innings. The Yankees or someone else will pay Cliff Lee three times what this group made for half the innings and is unlikely to get the same quality.

It's not that starters can be dispensed with, they obviously can't. But the Marlins with these moves lost a player they would have had to lose anyway and a player who has yet to prove he can even play on this level and in return they have gotten 200+ quality innings that they simply did not have before. And at 1/10th the cost of Uggla's probable arbitration-based or extension salary.

That's not a bad deal no matter how you slice it.

Catcher in the Rye (with a beer chaser)

In his age 29 season, John Buck put up a career season, posting a .281 Batting Average (40 points over his career) and knocking 20 home runs in 118 games (409 ABs). As catchers go, it was a thoroughly respectable season, .802 OPS .489 slugging. Not wonderful, but perfectly acceptable.

However, if there was one lesson that Buck learned more than any other in 2010, it's that chicks dig the long ball. Buck struckout 111 times and walked the second fewest times in his career. "amassing" 16 walks to edge out his previous low of 13 which he "accomplished" in less half the plate appearances in 2009. As a result, despite hitting 34 points higher than any other season in his career, he posted a.314 OBP.

Now he's in the National League and what can we expect? It doesn't look good. A player like Buck who only hurts the opposition through the long ball is a poor choice for a #8 hitter (where his .243 career batting average and .421 career slugging suggest he go) as he can be easily neutralized in favour of facing the pitcher. Furthermore, even though I despise the use of K:BB ratios (strikeout ratios and walk ratios each have their function, but together they are just noise), 111:16 is not a good sign, not at all.

The Marlins are in need of baserunners. Obtaining Omar Infante, for all his good work for the Braves last season, and losing Dan Uggla doesn't actually improve that. Buck can't be batted up in the order because everything he does except the home run creates outs in bunches. Buck can't accomplish much in the back of the order because in the NL, with the pitcher and now with Infante, there is no incentive to give Buck anything he can drive. We will hear, of course, the usual - all he has to do is call a good game and keep a young pitching staff in order. But you have to score runs and this will take runs off the board.

After the loss of Ronnie Paulino for PEDs (he will be back in 2011) and The continuing injuries to John Baker, the Marlins look to have made a panic signing here. What Buck provides could probably have been provided by any of a dozen decent catch-and-throw types and for a lot less than an $18 million commitment over three seasons. Felipe Paulino Minor League Statistics & History - Baseball-Reference.com

The Rockies shipped veteran utility guy Clint Barmes to the Astros for Felipe Paulino. Barmes is pretty much a known quantity here. He moves to a good park (albeit from a better one) and a slightly better division for hitting. But let's be frank, Barmes' OPS at Coors descended below .800 for his career, so we are looking at a .750 OPS middle-infielder. Not terrible, but not the promised land. On the other hand, he could very well play regularly for the Astros and that makes him fantasy-worthy.

Paulino is a great 27-year-old return for the 32-year-old (in March) Barmes. Possibly the Rockies view Paulino similarly as Jorge De La Rosa, who also came to them at age 27. DLR you may recall, pitched for the Brewers and Royals with similar results before coming to the Rockies at age 27. De La Rosa turned into a respectable pitcher at the end of 2009 (and was also fine in 2010 when he wasn't injured) for which he is about to get a large payday. The Rockies hope Paulino will provide more or less the same results and for a fraction of the cost.

Paulino is not a sure bet for anything. But his strikeout rates are solid and he, unlike DLR, has been fairly stingy on the long ball (at least in the minors). He is "super-2" eligible, but under control for I believe three more seasons. His fantasy profile in Coors is not wonderful, but Minute Maid is not an easy park either and Paulino's main bogeyman is his walks. If he fixes those, he should be able to be successful in any park, including Coors. If not..well...then you won't have to worry about him. Also, in a new organization, they may try to revive the talk of him being moved to the bullpen. Given the release/ineffectiveness/health/age of the various rockies closers and closer candidates, that might make for some interesting possibilties there.

Joe Posnanski writes a thought-provoking post that is not really about steroids, or amphetamines or Willie Mays. Amongst the best writing Joe has done in recent memory, he takes a look at the innocence of baseball, or the lack thereof. Many of the "but they took greenies" scribblings feel like an apologia for steroid use. Posnanski, here, frames this in the context of the faux nostalgia for a time that never was. Touching some of the current cliches, but never with the feeling that he is just reheating a can that was opened days ago. Trus affection for a great player (Willie Mays) and a fine scribe (Pete Hammill) and a dose of realism that transcends what he calls the "romanticism."

Baseballdigest.com expert mock - some more thoughts

A friend writes - so OK Steve, I get it that Mock drafts aren't about who won according to a certain set of projections in mid-January, but who did win (summary including results here) the baseballdigest.com experts mock?

Baseball fans everywhere win I say!! OK, so seriously, and this will sound like I was weaseling out of it earlier. The winner was a player who did not show for reasons beyond his control and his team autodrafted. This isn't actually that meaningful because that just means that his team corresponded more closely to the rankings than ours did, and since the auto-draft runs off of those rankings, we would expect the computer to do well.

The real winner was Kevin Orris of Fantasypros911.com and I was a point or so behind Kevin in third (drafting first and taking Joel Pineiro...I mean Albert Pujols).

Two approaches - that of our mystery auto-drafter, and that of Kelly Pfleiger. One pitching first and the other pitching last.

I've already spoken a little about Kelly Pfleiger's pitching-last strategy. In a 12 team league you have the potential to garner 60 points in both pitching and in defense. Kelly was able to garner 33 pitching points despite not taking a starter until round 13. That's pretty good in and of itself, and had he taken a sixth starter instead of a fourth reliever, he likely would have been projected to another 10 points. That is pretty much the definition of how to win a pitching-last strategy. Except, and apologies to Kelly, he didn't get enough hitting points. Although sites like Baseballhq.com that advocate grabbing hitting first spend a fair amount of time on how to cherry pick starting pitching at the end of the draft (and Kelly got a wonderful staff - Baker, Dempster, Oswalt, Danks and Johnathan Sanchez), the key to making this work is really dominating the hitting categories. Kelly garnered just 35 points in hitting and was particularly hard hit in steals with only four markers.

The easy thing to say about it is that you leave yourself very little margin by drafting this way. As we said about Todd's risk picks, it wasn't that Kelly got any bad prices for the goods, it's that after going that route, he couldn't, COULDN'T then turn around and nibble at steals without a big rabbit. So After going with Kinsler, Markakis, Shane Victorino and then Alfonso Soriano, it was pretty clear that the steals weren't going to come and with the exception of 17th round Corey Hart, no more steals were forthcoming. Compounding the problem these second tier power and speed guys also project as second tier power hitters and so both home runs and RBI were more anemic than you can carry and win in a competitive format.

On the other side, our auto-picker, with everyone else backing off starting pitching, got four (4!!) prime starters in his first six picks with Lincecum, CC, Haren and Cliff Lee. A couple of overpriced closers later on and the robot set him up with a quite understandable 59.5 points (only losing .5 points in saves to RotoRob's Tim McLeod). Since Kevin Orris of Fantasypros911.com came in with 80.5 points, that meant that the robot only had to garner 4 points per category in the offense - which in this era of steals punting shouldn't have provided any difficulty....being a robot, it was difficult but he still got 22 points offensively and the "Win."

I'll just say this, knowing full well that no one will listen or believe. The reason that pitching-last strategies used to work so well had less to do with the reliability of pitchers than it did with the fact that by drafting hitters first and pitchers last you are essentially drafting against yourself and you are free to take the best players of the class available at the time.

The robot draft is a great illustration of this. By drafting "in space" the robot got an airtight pitching staff (easier in pitching because of the two qualitative stats ERA/WHIP than hitting's single BA) and then by just getting replacement level (for the round) offensive players it constructed a projected win. Not the same thing as a real win and it's good to note here that all projections (including the excellent ones used here from Mastersball.com) tend to compress actual results. Well except CBS which won (!) the fantasy accuracy awards at FTSA despite projecting about twice as many 100 RBI guys (for example) than got 100 this year or any other year in the past decade...well maybe not the last decade.

a quick word on drafting a pitching staff. If you approach pitching the way most people do, of COURSE you will find it unpredictable. When we launch optimalbaseball I'll write more fully about this. But here's a couple of quick hits. Watch your K rates. Of course this is vital in innings-limited formats, but it is still important in regular roto formats. If you shoot for 8/9ip you'll rarely finish less than first or second in K's. Most starting pitchers average a win per 14-17 ip. The one that lie outside this fall into a couple of categories - low IP (which you'll have to make up and it will even out), or bad pitchers for bad teams. Remember bad pitchers for bad teams. Not everyone is going to be Steve Carlton of the 72 Phils or Chad Cordero of the 5th place (albeit .500) Nationals of 2005, but good pitchers will get wins even for a bad team. Teams don't lack 16 game winners because they are bad, they are bad (at least in part) because they don't have 16 game winners.

The shorthand here is if you want to win in pitching all you need do is:

A) draft eight K per nine pitchers.

B) Ignore ERA and draft good WHIP

C) Draft pitchers with a high rate of decisions per start

D) Draft one more starter than you think you need.

Remember - if you are going pitching first or hitting first, you must kill the category across the board. Good luck out there!

Thanks to all who participated for a fun evening of baseball talk and challenging draft. We all do mock drafts and the usefulness is directly proportional to the strength of the people participating. Kudos! The mock was a standard roto 23 player set (no bench) vanilla 5x5 run on the incomparable mockdraftcentral.com . Optimalbaseball is not up and running as yet, so I will warn you that we are a small site that is devoted to the experienced player and we do not go through a lot of groundwork here - so instead of the usual tabulation of who "won" and which players went too high or too low (which will change anyway), I wanted to show how this draft can be practically applied to your own draft and as luck would have it we have several excellent examples.

“I bet you don’t do this in a real draft”

Todd Habiger of Rotorob.com is a fine player and a good sport, so I am sure he will forgive me for picking on him a bit. One of the prime dangers of mock drafting is that you don’t have to “pay” for risk taking. Todd started off with two major question marks amongst his first five picks (Jose Reyes and B.J. Upton), followed by two incomplete resumes at six and seven (Gordon Beckham and Matt Wieters) and finished round 11 to round 23 with every pick being at least some kind of question mark. Age and injuries (Billy Wagner and David Ortiz), an improbable 2009 (Garrett Jones), major arm injuries (Brandon Webb) or top talent with questions (what‘s Neftali Feliz‘ role? What‘s up with Joba?). The question here isn’t price because Todd didn’t overpay for any of these players. It’s that when you take two or three risks you might be OK, but when you take 10, some of them are going to fail. I bet Todd doesn’t do this in a real draft.

“I started picking SPs in the 13th round and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.”

The takeaway from Fantasygameday.com’s Kelly Pfleiger’s fine starting-pitching-late approach is to avoid drafting for the projected results. Kelly drafted five starters instead of six, opting to pick up Scott Downs instead of a replacement-level starter, something we all would do. Thus a probable projection of second or third place became a respectable fifth because of the reduced wins and K‘s. Kelly did exactly the right thing and the projections weren‘t “wrong“ but they didn’t tell the story.

“The Tortoise and the Hair”

If you want to go bald like the shiney-pated wonder Tim McLeod of RotoRob.com, obsess about speed this season. Tim drafted what would any other year have been two steps on an easy path to stolen base points with Carl Crawford in the first pick of the second round and Elvis Andrus in the 11th round. Instead he projected as 7th in steals. There are a LOT of stolen bases out there this season, and a lot of them come from people with power. Kevin Orris, though lacking a Crawford-type, projected at the top of both stolen bases and home runs by getting steals all the way up and down his batting order.

“What do you mean I am overdrawn? I still have checks!”

We all do this, so it’s not really a reflection on Joel Henard who assembled one of the best teams in the draft including a top three offense. Joel drafted Javier Vazquez, Matt Cain and Tommy Hanson starting in the seventh round but finished up with a projected two points for wins and 1.5 for K’s. The low strikeout rates of J.A. Happ and Joel Pineiro with a low or zero projection for Colby Lewis will do that to you. I would guess that in real life this would play out alright, but beware of drawing too heavily on your account balance from a good start or you might bounce a good beginning into an average finish, or worse.

Conclusion:

1. It's just practice, but don't practice generating risk for yourself.

2. Don't mock to "win" the projections - you'll make decisions that you should not make in your real draft.

3. In 2010 there is a TON of speed available, so draft accordingly.

4. Always, always remember to keep your lead by not drawing on a good start as if it were your checking account.
